Our practice will explore how contemporary drawing functions within a larger social context.
THE RESEARCH PART OF THINGS:
When I say research, I'm referring to the blog & sketchbook portion of class. Key to this, is how you approach the blog. Why not have a cup of coffee in hand or sit in a place that makes you feel inspired to start the day? How about The Coffee Ethic downtown? It's a fantastic space where most everything is reclaimed. Plus, they keep hosting J. M. Shiveley's ongoing project The Hive, which means you don't have to be Springfield famous to make a project happen.
Alright, now where was I...oh yes, so we've got our coffee (if you don't like coffee, substitute other beverage or food/place of choice here). Now, begins the research. I've designed the blog so that (fingers crossed) you find something of interest. Give yourself a half hour or so to just be on the blog. Begin by catching up on entries and clicking links I've posted. Pull your moleskin out, write or sketch notes on any ideas, artists, projects, thoughts that come to mind. From the initial links you clicked, click further into sites or follow other links to continue research. Start carrying that moleskin with you everywhere and use it to record experience.
When possible, stop by Good Morning Class at least three times a week. Schedule time for the blog to create a research rhythm that will inform your drawings. Usually, I will post a sketchbook assignment on Thursdays (sometimes Tuesdays) due the following week (also announced in class). This will give you the weekend to complete the exercise. So, be sure you're checking the Blog to have exercises finished on time.
